Photographing a baby’s birth for the first time was the most validating and fulfilling professional experience for Beatrix Fuhrmann, a mum of 2 and a Muswell Hill baby and family photographer. She decided to start offering Birth Story photography to other expectant parents. Here she explains why, and what it involves.

What is birth photography?

Practically, it’s documentary photography of active labour and the first hour after the baby’s arrival. Emotionally, there’s a lot more to it!

For me, birth photography documents the final stage in the journey to parenthood. It captures the transition from being expecting parents to actual parents.

Birth Story photography celebrates the beauty of birth, highlighting the positive and showing the raw emotions of mother and birth partner. It conveys the raw emotion, love, tears, happiness, joy and excitement. And it helps to take away the taboo, stigma and angst that can surround birth and breastfeeding.

What’s the value of birth photography to me, as the mother?

Birthing a baby is the most profound and awe-inspiring experience. So many things are happening at once. You are focusing on yourself and your inner strength. The animal in you will take over eventually and the recollection of the event is often only fragments.

Birth photography is like a missing piece to the big puzzle. It’ll not only show you and your partner being swept off your feet by your new baby, but it’ll show how strong, beautiful and vulnerable you all are. It is also a wonderful gift to your child. I think it’s amazing to be able to look back on the beginning of yourself.

Will photos of the birth be bloody or graphic?

Most importantly, we will talk before the birth about what you are comfortable with. The pictures will be tasteful and modest.

While you are in labour, I’ll capture the interaction with your birth partner, all the little moments and details you probably won’t remember.  During the crowning, I’ll focus on the baby. The right angle and use of available light make a huge difference, and that’s where my expertise comes in to play!

I use a mixture of colour and black and white photography. I usually take breastfeeding photos too, if you are happy with that.

What if I want photos of my very new baby, but not the actual birth?

I also offer Hello World sessions. Ideally, these take place wherever you’ve given birth – at hospital or at home – and as soon as possible in the first 48 hours of baby’s life.

This 2-hour documentary session will capture the first moments of you and your family with your new baby. It’s a great way to document your baby’s introduction to your family, especially older siblings.

When should we book you?

As soon as possible, I’m only taking bookings until July 2018 and only one birth per month. So if you are due in the next 5 months, please do get in touch!

Birth timings are very unpredictable. Are you ‘on call’ ?

Once you have booked, I’ll reserve 2 weeks before and after your due date and will be on call 24/7. To ensure I can be there on time, I only book local births which are within minutes 30 of Muswell Hill by car. I will have a backup photographer if, for some unlikely reason, I am not available. Or we can arrange a Hello World session within the first 48 hours of baby’s birth.

How much will it cost?

The Birth Story package is available from £800. I’ll be with you throughout your active labour until approximately 1 hour after the birth of your baby.

Hello World sessions are £400. Find out more on my website www.beatrixfuhrmann.co.uk/birth-photography.

We’re not sure if this is right for us…

I love to tell the birth story of any couple, in any birth situation – however unconventional! Please call me for a chat about any concerns. It’s my job to make you feel comfortable.

Can you continue to tell our family story?

Absolutely. As a family photographer, I’d love to keep telling your story – capturing how your new baby grows, the way you all interact, and enjoy being together. My aim is to capture your children in a natural and playful way, holding on to those fleeting moments of laughter, tears, joy and silliness. The adventure starts here!
