Into The Woods Outdoor Nursery is North London’s first outdoor nursery. It has been running since April 2014 in the beautiful woodlands of Queens Wood and Highgate Wood. The idea of a childcare setting takes place entirely outdoors is not new. In many parts of Scandinavia and Germany parents bring their a designated place in the woods and the children spend all day outside with specialised forest school trained staff.

Emma who founded Into The Woods had been a primary school teacher for over 15 years specialising in Early Years education for the last 10 years. After completing a forest school training she realised that this was the way forward.

Outdoors is the natural place to learn. Children in forest schools benefit from their outdoor education. Physical development happens naturally outdoors as they run, climb, dig and swing from trees. But forest school education not only benefits their physical health, but also their social competence, creativity and desire to learn. There is so much scope for exploration, problem solving and creativity outside. There is less conflict and stressful situations as there is plenty of space and natural resources for the children to use. The children learn naturally through doing and having hands on experiences. They choose their own activities and set their challenges, which all has a positive impact on their self esteem and attitudes to learning.

Emma is very supportive of the ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing’ slogan. The children are kitted up properly with thermal layers and waterproofs. If it rains the activities continue either under a shelter made in the trees or out making most of the rain. The children are out in all weathers to enable them to experience nature at its best. Into The Woods Outdoor Nursery offers fantastic education outdoors, whatever the weather or season, but if necessary the nursery has an indoor base at Queens Wood Cafe
